Warwick Class (Nursery and Reception)

Welcome to Warwick Class, the home of our Foundation Stage

At Burford Primary School, we ensure that our early years setting is driven by the four guiding principles:

• every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
• children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
• children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.

In Warwick Class we welcome up to 10 children in our Nursery (from the term after their third birthday) and 20 children in our Reception. The children spend time learning with their age group, and within the whole class, meaning that our nursery children have a very smooth transition when they begin their Reception Year. In Warwick Class we love to learn.

There are seven areas of learning that develop and shape our curriculum; all are important and interlinked. There are three prime areas of learning:

• Communication and Language (CLL)
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
• Physical Development (PD)

The four specific areas of learning, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied are:

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World (UW)
• Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

Phonics, Reading and Writing

We teach systematic synthetic phonics using the Read Write Inc. Scheme, more information can be found below and on our Early Reading Page. We run a parent workshop in term 1.

Maths

We teach Maths using the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Maths (NCETM) and BBO Maths Mastery programme ensuring the children leave Reception with a solid understanding of numbers to 10, focusing on key concepts such as subitising, cardinality, ordinality and composition of numbers as well as investigating patterning with numbers and shapes.

Wider Curriculum

Like the rest of the school we use Cornerstones as a stimulus for much for our wider curriculum including Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. We follow a different ‘class project’ each term and adapt our planning to include the children’s interests. We also use resources from the Association of Science Education (ASE) to ensure curriculum coverage.

For the teaching of PE we follow Complete PE and are lucky to have a PE specialist teach the class every Monday afternoon. We also enjoy weekly outdoor sessions on our paddock as well as daily use of the bikes and trikes and climbing equipment.

Music is taught through the Charanga scheme and compliments the singing we do for Autumn Celebration, Christmas Nativity and our Easter Celebration, all of which parents are invited to join in Burford Church.

As a school we use the Jigsaw Programme to teach Personal, Social and Emotional Development and teach the same focus each term, meaning that all children are thinking about the same focus which is shared in our whole school assemblies.

We enjoy weekly class assemblies that follow our termly themes and school message of Respect, Aspire, Achieve.

Parental Involvement

All of our learning is celebrated through our class ‘floor books’ that we share with you at parents evenings and any other time upon request. We use Class Dojo to share photos of what your child has been learning that week and welcome parental contact via messaging on Class Dojo or our class e mail warwick@burford-pri.oxon.sch.uk.
